Description

Add whimsical character to your succulent collection with the distinctive Old Man Cactus (Cephalocereus senilis) — instantly recognizable by its long, shaggy white hairs that protect it from harsh sun.

Description & Care:
This columnar cactus grows tall and skinny, cloaked in a fluffy coat of white hairs. Despite its soft look, it does have sharp spines underneath. The Old Man Cactus is not edible, so no bell peppers here — but it makes a dramatic accent in containers or xeriscapes. Hardy in USDA Zones 9–11, it does well in Texas’ warmer areas. Keep soil sandy and well-draining with a pH between 6.1–7.8. Give it full sun but offer afternoon shade in Texas’ hottest areas to prevent scorching its “hair.” Water sparingly — only when the soil is completely dry.

Why Choose This Cactus?
Unlike similar columnar cacti, the Old Man Cactus’ shaggy coat provides extra sun protection and unique texture. Its look sparks conversation and adds variety to any succulent garden.

Planting Season:
Best planted in spring or fall, when temperatures are milder, to allow roots to establish.

Culinary Use:
Not edible; this cactus is purely ornamental.

Country of Origin:
Native to the rocky slopes of Hidalgo and Veracruz, Mexico.
